We all understand that the best approach to life is a positive one. Yes, the power of positive thinking will move you and grove you. It will change your life! And unfortunately, so will negative thinking.
So where do we turn on days that we just can’t seem to muster up that single thought that will take us from “blah” to “hurrah!”
How do we create a great day with a muddy mind?
Here are a few techniques that I found effective in pushing past gloom and doom and onto a more pleasant place.
1 Take it one thought at a time. When I’m in “a mood” (as I refer to my boo-hoo moments), I look for the next highest thought and then keep climbing that thought ladder until I’m free. Your next highest thought might be changing your focus from a stressful financial situation to looking for a solution to it. Perceived problems don’t fix themselves, and they certainly don’t improve with stress or worry. Redirect your thoughts to the solution side of the problem and feel your energy shift.
2. A laugh a day keeps the blues away. If your poor mood is a result of grief, anger or some other debilitating emotion, the next thought to grab onto is one that makes you feel good. It really doesn’t matter what it is. Direct your mind to a person, place or thing that gives you warm fuzzies or makes you laugh. Read, watch or listen to something funny. You cannot move north and south at the same time so when you’re laughing or loving, your vibration is moving north and your mood will have no choice but to follow.
3. Remember the Cyndi Lauper hit Girls Just Want to Have Fun? Well, it works for boys too. Another simple, effective method of climbing out of the pits is to force yourself to do something you enjoy. Listen to music, paint, dance, read – whatever it is, make sure it’s upbeat and positive! Do NOT listen to achy, heart-breaky, music.
4. Blow it up! Yes, you read that right. Following is an exercise that may surprise you in its power to change your mood:
Take all of your negative feelings, no matter what they are (anger, resentment, fear) and visualize them in a ball, suspended in front of you. I call this the “Bad Ball”. You can name it whatever you’d like. Decorate the ball to look like the negative thoughts you’re having. For instance, when I do this exercise, I generally visualize my ball as dark gray with rusty barbed wire wrapped around it (yeah, I know). Once you’ve transferred all of your negative thoughts into this ball – mentally destroy it. That’s right, obliterate it. Since you’re doing this with your imagination, you may do it any way you’d like. Blow it up; cut it into pieces; pop it. It really doesn’t matter how you destroy it, just as long as you visualize its demise. Believe it or not, this works surprisingly well.
Using one or all of the above techniques will help direct you back to a path of pleasantry. Yes, there are days that we would rather throw the blanket over our heads, stay in bed all day and have a pity party. We all have them. It’s part of this ever-changing and ongoing human experience; part of our growth. But it’s at those points that we need to make the decision to either stay in the passenger seat and take a ride to the next pity party (and there’s never a shortage) or take control of the wheel. The choice is yours and you always have a choice. The question is, what’s that choice going to be? I say, “Take the wheel!”
Be aware of your thoughts and take notice if they are working for or against you. After all, what you think about – you bring about, so it is in your best interest to get rid of the downers. And remember, you can always put them in your bad ball and blow ’em up!
